We got a notice a few weeks ago that they'd found issues with our 2006 tax return and we owe the government money. Since I generally do the taxes I was of course freaked out. I was also amazed that we had gotten a BIG FAT ENVELOPE FROM THE IRS and my dear husband didn't open it! I can let a lot of things lay around but a BIG FAT ENVELOPE FROM THE IRS can't possibly be good. Thus began the search for all of our 2006 tax information--yes, the year we sold a house, bought a house and carried three mortgages for a period of time--paperwork hell.
Given that our deadline to respond is Monday I finally sucked it up and re-did the 2006 taxes this evening. According to my estimates we owe but we don't owe as much as the IRS says we owe. So now, do I send a check for the whole amount or just what I think I owe plus the interest? How do I figure the interest on a lower amount? Its not that much difference but I really don't want to give them any more money than I have to, I also don't want to have to pay additional interest on money they've loaned me for the last year. Ugh.
I've got to say that the whole you owe us interest thing really ticks me off. I made a mistake, fine. But you are going to make me not only pay back the money but interest for my mistake that it took you over a year to find? Gheesh, that seems unfair somehow. Oh well. Gman's turn now, I will never, ever send in another tax form until he has gone over it with a fine tooth comb!

You know that warning about drowsiness?
Take it seriously. Last night I took a couple of Benadryl to try and rope in my allergies. I have a nasal spray too but its just not doing the trick. At that point I'd have done anything to stop the itching and runny nose. Someone should have warned me it just wasn't driving that I wanted to avoid. "Do not, under any circumstances attempt hair removal of any type while under the influence of these drugs" is the warning I would add to that label if I were queen.
Boobah begged me to trim her bangs so I obliged and between my haziness, Gman's "help" and her moving her head it wasn't a great experience for any of us. She kept moving her eyebrows and right in the middle of her bangs there is a short place. I gave a fleeting thought to sneaking into her room last night and evening them up while she slept and was still. It didn't look that bad this morning but I am sure grandma will have something to say about it when we go visit for Easter.
Then in another stroke of genius I finally remembered that I needed to wax my eyebrows to look a little less like Sasquatch. I got out the wax (which I never intended to buy, I thought I got the strips), warmed it up and went to town. I managed to get a lot more in my eyebrows than I had intended as well as trapping a good hunk of eyelashes. I tried everything I could think of to try and get the stuff out of my eyelashes and brows without pulling out hair. I was only marginally successful. I have a little bald spot in my right eyebrow and am missing a clump of eyelashes as well. Gman found this too highly entertaining.

Coffee+Tide=Barf Smell?
This morning I stopped at 4-bucks for a skinny mocha and ran into my tri training coach. We chatted a minute and when I turned to go I spilled coffee down the front of my white shirt (and I do have a meeting with my boss this morning). I whipped out the fabulous Tide pen and cleaned up my mess-coffee gone, no trip home to change my clothes. Then I realized that there was a stench, a smell like vomit radiating from my chest. It was the same smell that GMan created the other day when he spilled coffee on a chamois shirt. I assumed it was the shirt. Apparently not. Who knew that mixing the Tide pen and coffee created a smell equivalent to an elementary school classroom after someone loses their lunch!I keep getting a whiff of the offending smell and am transported back to the days of having a small infant. I'd come to work and smell spit-up. I couldn't see it, often I'd already cleaned it up but the smell lingered. I hope this one goes away and FAST!

Guilty Pleasure: American Gladiators
I don't know that I'd admit to watching the athletic contest in sparky, sparse costumes to just anyone so consider yourselves lucky! In the early/mid-90s I remember the Gladiators keeping me company late at night when I was up waiting for something bad to happen while I was on call. It had a fake pro-wrestling side to it but then there was the athletic ability of regular people to take on these larger than life gladiators as well as compete against each other and themselves. Call it the beginning of reality TV. A show before its time.
Last week when I was in Ohio for the holidays I caught an old episode on ESPN Classic and was frightened that I could remember watching it and knew who would win but I watched it anyway. Sunday night when the new edition of the show premiered I couldn't help but be pulled back into a different time and place. The women gladiators seemed a bit less, how shall we say, silicone, this time but were as over the top as always especially with the addition of Hellga.
An added bonus is a show, for a change, that Scott and I both enjoyed. With Hulk Hogan adding to the faux athletic event atmosphere it is bad entertainment at its best. The new twists, like having some events take place over a pool of water also make a good update of a classic. I love rooting for the underdog and I guess that's what we'll be doing for the next few weeks.

Its all fun and games until the police show up
I know I've been all but absent lately. The trip to Houston apparently stirred up my allergies which then made my sinuses feel like they might implode. Add that to all of the other fun and games that December brings and there has barely been time to think.
Tonight I went to the neighborhood ladies meeting. The lady across the street drove. We were there about 20 minutes when the phone rang and someone asked for Heather. The new lady presumed it must be for her and I figured my husband had NO idea where I was (and I was right). She came back, butchered my name and said it was the police. Needless to say I was more than a little freaked out.
I took the phone, it was the 911 dispatcher. They had received a call from my cell phone and it sounded like there was a heated discussion in the background so they were trying to verify that I was okay. Okay, it takes me about 5 minutes to work through all the menus to make a call so I can't imagine how the phone in my purse managed to call 911. She said they traced it through Verizon and then my company and managed to find me. She said that there would be an officer out shortly to confirm that I was okay. I sit back down and 2 minutes later Gman is on the phone, sounding slightly worried. I assured him I was fine. 2 minutes after that it was the cute policeman at the door with a big smile on his face. All the ladies waved at him and he shook his head and left.
Of course everyone got a good laugh out of the ruckus we were creating. There were at least 30 women there tonight, eating, drinking and talking which apparently comes through as a domestic disturbance on the cell phone. Later the neighbor noticed she had a missed call. Her daughter answered the phone and giggled. Apparently my husband gave the police their number and told them we were together. When the police got her husband on the phone and they told him it sounded like we were fighting his response--"oh, I thought they were done discussing the bylaws."
I am guessing the dispatchers are having a good laugh on us tonight. Now I've got to figure out how the heck my phone in my purse managed to dial 911.
Perhaps if I were more diligent about using the Family Matters Day Runner products and actually listing where I'd be, my husband wouldn't have to send the police to the neighbors to find me! Check out my review for Parent Bloggers over at Maven Says.

Born to Run?
I'm not talking about the Boss here (although I will supply you with a little music video to keep you interested).
At various points in my life I've tried to run. Never have a been very successful. Some people are born to run, my body is just not one of them. I like the idea of running, I like the time alone to think--its the wear and tear on the joints and the burning lungs I could do without. But I decided I wanted to do a triathlon next year so, I guess I have to run at least 5K.
I've been trying to learn to run for the past four weeks. I am doing a Couch to 5K training regimen. I wasn't exactly a couch potato to start with so I started out in phase two where 9 minutes of running got introduced to a 30 min walk/run session. This week it is up to 50/50 running and walking for half an hour. I love that I feel like I am getting a great workout in a relatively short amount of time. I love that I am doing something I've never been able to do before. I love that I can see progress every week. I hate that its dark in the mornings so running outside is something I am just not comfortable with. I hate that if I run in the evening I can't sleep. I hate the fact that if I try to run and then get back work I sweat for the next half hour and the shower I take really does me no good.
This morning I decided the only way I would get my run in was to get us out the door early, drop off the girls, go to the gym, get in a quick workout, shower and dash to the office in time to get my head on for my 9AM meeting. Thank you girlies for being cooperative this morning! Out the door -check, girls dropped off-check, run-check, shower-check. Hey, why am I still sweating? Towel off repeatedly as I dress and dry my hair-check. Get to work-check. Feel dry and confident--not so much. I swear I didn't fully dry out until halfway through my second meeting. I've done the sniff test 10 times, thankfully it seems to be just me that is uncomfortable, at least I'm not smelly.
So, I may not have been born to run but hopefully this old dog can learn a new trick or two! Gretchen, Tree and Anne, my PIMs who just finished the Denver Half Marathon are certainly inspiration! Builder Mama was running 10Ks as well.

Eating pavement
When I started riding my bike more I swore I'd never get clipless pedals eventhough I had the shoes from spinning class. A few days out on the trails trying to get up hills and having my feet slide around cured that! Saturday morning I headed out to ride a favorite trail determined I wasn't going to walk the bike, I was going to make it up every hill.
At the end of the 10 mile ride (I wanted to do more but the trip back home to retrieve my helmet ate up an extra half hour) I was feeling great. Got up all the hills--check. Didn't fall over-check. As I neared the parking lot where I was parked there were lots of people. There was a "walk for paws" going on in the park on the other side of the road. Not only were there lots of people but lots of dogs. Not wanting to run anyone over I decided I'd get off the bike and walk it up the hill to the parking lot. Apparently I should have started that thought process just a tad sooner.
I got my first foot unclipped quickly. Unfortunately I was quickly coming to a stop and leaning towards the other foot. So, in front of bunches of people I toppled over on the asphalt. I was horribly embarrassed, really couldn't I have fallen over without so many witnesses? I managed to untangle myself. Some nice guy picked up my bell and reattach it. A little blood from the elbow, a little scrape on the knee I was just fine. Then the little old man who had been observing said "I don't think anyone needs those things unless you are riding 50 miles or something, certainly not for just riding around." It was everything I could do not to tell him that I would've been just fine if he hadn't poking along so I couldn't possibly have made the turn I needed to get to my car.
I knew it was inevitable, eventually I'd end up on the ground. The whole thing happened in slow motion. The realization, oh shit, I'm falling...Oh, I really hope this doesn't hurt too bad...Geez, I must look really stupid with my other leg up in the air. In spin class one morning they were joking about it, discussing the fact that everyone falls over eventually--and more than once. They said that after the first time its just a feeling of resignation and here I go again. I hope I don't have to find that out too soon!

Everyday is a many-athalon

So here I was thinking that training for a triathlon was way beyond my reach. Now I've decided that training for a triathlon is a lot like the rest of my life...
- Tri-swim, bike, run
Life-Mom, Wife, Employee - Tri-Well orchestrated transitions from one piece of equipment to another
Life-Transitions from one part of the day to another, gym to home to drop off to work to home - Tri-the temptation to overtrain
Life-the temptation to overcommit (in my life this is MUCH more realistic than the overtraining thing) - Tri-obsessing about equipment, times, how to fit everything in
Life-obsessing about activities, Kindergarten, clothes, shoes, feeding the family, volunteering, everyones performance, how to fit everything in - Tri-reading every book available on tri's, running, swimming and cycling
Life-read the book of the day on parenting, stress, working mothers, or the obsession du jour
It keeps coming back to me that I need to find better balance in my life. I gave up trying to be the best at everything but I still haven't quite gotten over the doing everything thing. The tri training is actually helping with the balance, I have a little time to myself in the morning, I am ready for the day when its time to get everyone else up and moving and I feel so much better and more energetic. For the most part I am so tired that I sleep as well. Thankfully I have Mr. D to fall back on to poke me a bit and get me back in line when that part (or any of the others) falls apart.

What happened to my stomach of steel?
Blech. That pretty much describes how I feel. I've been so good about working out. Yesterday morning I just couldn't pull myself out of the bed at 5:15 to go swim. My schedule yesterday was light on meetings so I went at lunch time, first few laps fine. Then the nausea hit me. I managed a few more laps on my back. Every time I thought about swimming freestyle again my stomach answered "do it and I'll revolt." I managed to drag myself out of the pool and stumble back to the locker room. Back at my desk I carefully picked things I thought would stop the madness. It worked reasonably well--until the gas came. I don't know what fired me up but the power of the explosions coming out of my backside are like none I've encountered before. I actually blew so much air in the tub it splashed water out--something I'd expect only from Gman (who, is experiencing technical difficulties with his host, he has not disappeared off the face of the earth).
Off to try the magic of acupuncture this morning and see if it can help right my system. Otherwise I might need to avoid others until is passes (no pun intended!).

It snot funny
Well, I guess it is now, but not at the time.
I have this annoying cough. I can sit at my desk and I cough occasionally but it snot so bad. Then I went to run a meeting this morning. We are about 15 minutes in and a coughing jag hits. Bad enough since I am trying to lead these people through a conversation on a rather complex topic. Then a particularly jarring cough hits and I can feel snot sneaking towards the end of my nose. If I can't get it under control I am going to blow snot bubbles. I can feel it. Add that on to the coughing jag and I am now turning bright red and getting blow snot on my colleagues--now there is some team building.
One of the guys asks if he can get me water. I give him the hand and tell them I'll be right back and go sprinting from the room. I get a cup of water which helps marginally. Then I head to the restroom for a serious nose blowing. Really, did I need this today?
